Cumberland Elementary School

Title 1 Parent Involvement Policy

Action Plan For Improving Home-School Relations

Cumberland Elementary realizes that parent involvement is necessary if we are to help children develop and achieve to their highest potential. Therefore, we strive to work together using unique approaches to guide and strengthen the relationship between home and school.

Advisory/Decision Making: Cumberland Elementary faculty staff and parents work together to plan, develop, revise, improve and evaluate a written parent involvement policy, a school parent compact and a school wide plan.

Communications: Clearly communicated expectations, roles and responsibilities are necessary for effective home and school relationship to develop.

Cumberland promotes a positive home and school relationship by:

  • Communication in a timely manner with parents;
  • Providing parents with an understanding of educational goals, curriculum and assessment;
  • Providing opportunities for parent involvement through home visits, parent meetings, training sessions and volunteer activities;
  • Providing parents with an understanding of the school wide plan, the parent-school compact annually;
  • Using the position of a family/school coordinator.

Note: If needed, communications may be translated into a native language to the extent possible.

Supporters: Cumberland Elementary faculty and parents jointly developed a parent-school compact that describes how the home and school share the responsibility for student achievement. The compact is distributed to all parents, is on file in the school office and is used during parent-teacher conferences.

Learners: Meetings/Training – Cumberland promotes the idea that parents are the child’s first and most important teachers. Several educational/training opportunities for both parents and teachers create a meaningful communication between home and school.

Community Relations: To assist parents in meeting the academic and social needs of their children, Cumberland uses the resources of community organizations and businesses.
